How to maintain lead-acid battery forklift in winter?

Dec 30, 2022

The heavy snow has passed, the cold air is coming, and the temperature has dropped sharply. Recently, many customers have reported some situations encountered in the use of lead-acid batteries. In a low temperature environment, in order to ensure the normal operation of the electric forklift during use, NEOlift brings you a small coup.

Winter protection

1. Maintain the temperature of the electrolyte

The temperature of the electrolyte has a great influence on the capacity of the battery. Every time the ambient temperature decreases by 1°C, the capacity will decrease by about 1~2%.

For this reason, to increase the temperature of the electrolyte, the forklift should be parked indoors, or the battery should be moved into a room above 0°C.

2. Appropriately increase the charging frequency

In winter, when the battery is discharged to 50%, the electrolyte is in danger of freezing.

Therefore, it is necessary to appropriately increase the charging frequency of the forklift in winter to prevent the electrolyte from freezing.

3. Add distilled water

Distilled water should be added to the battery to mix evenly with the electrolyte.

To do this, the battery needs to be fully charged before adding distilled water. This allows the electrolyte and distilled water to mix quickly without freezing.

Daily inspection

1. Liquid level: If the liquid level is lower than the rated level, the service life of the battery will be shortened, and too little electrolyte will cause heat damage to the battery. Therefore, it is necessary to always pay attention to whether the electrolyte is sufficient.

2. Terminals, wires, and covers: Always check the joints of the battery terminals and the connection with the wires for corrosion caused by oxidation, and at the same time check whether the cover is deformed and whether there is heat.

3. Appearance: If the surface of the battery is dirty, it will cause electric leakage. The surface of the battery should be kept clean and dry at any time.

Daily maintenance

1. Add water: Add distilled water according to the specified liquid level. Do not add too much distilled water to prolong the interval of adding water. If you add too much water, the electrolyte will overflow and cause leakage.

2. Charging: Unplugging the charging plug during charging will generate an arc, and the plug can only be unplugged after the charging is turned off. After charging, there will be a lot of hydrogen gas around the battery, and any open flames should not be close to it. The cover of the battery should be opened for charging.

3. Maintenance of terminals, wires and covers: only by professional and technical personnel designated by the manufacturer.

4. Cleaning: If it is not too dirty, you can wipe it with a damp cloth; if it is very dirty, remove the battery from the car, wash it with water and let it dry naturally.

The cold wave is coming, please remember to "keep warm" for the forklift.
